Just a quick post to let you all know how excited I am with my latest purchase. Skis! *Looks out of window to see if it’s snowing yet*
I’ve been saying for at least the last three winters that I wanted some skis, and finally, finally, following recent frustrations about lack of snow for snowshoeing, I caved in and ordered some. *checks window*
I haven’t skied for at least ten years and never with a free-heel binding, so I should be in line for frustrating times ahead. Maybe it’s time for a refresher at Fir Park. These days, I’m more interested in self powered touring than Pomas or T-bars, so went for some relatively long/skinny Fischer E99 backcountry skis with Rottefella Magnum BC bindings. The skis have a full metal edge, which may prove useful in Scotland and are waxless, which should hopefully reduce faff to a minimum.
Boots are Madshus Glitterind and poles are BD Traverse, as endorsed by Hendrik and Joe respectively. First impression of both is very favourable.
Thank you for the guidance gents.
*No snow yet*
Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Fingers crossed for snow for you Fraser! Glad I could help.
Those new Traverse look even nicer than my old ones. Not fair
It’s an absolute traverse-ty Joe.
I too will hold my finger’s crossed for snow (it’s been dumping it down here since Friday). Those new Glittertings looks pretty nice =)
Thanks Hendrik, and thanks again for the advice. The Glitterinds feel pretty comfy around the house, hope they remain so out on the trail…
O-Ho – I missed this exciting news the first time around. Thank Hendrik for TWIR!
I third the Traverse poles, and agree with Joe, the new designs look very cyberpunk. For the first time in my life I have pole envy
Hope you get out there on them soon (and have more luck than the ba§tard powder I’ve been battling with!).
Exciting indeed!
Your pulk photo series was most amusing, I guess you Nordic boys have slightly different frustrations with snow that we do here…
Very nice kit. I got my 75mm Rossignol boots this week and now I’m waiting for my Altai Hok skis and a bit more powder would be really nice too.
The skis are a few seasons old I think [but unused], which meant I picked them up for 110GBP, around half the newer version price! Sadly not much snow for XC around here ATM. Plans afoot to go north in search of some though!
